Cat Overload

I'm still sick but the good thing for you is that I have been incredibly bored at home because of an inability to sleep. I've found that an interesting 14 hour day can turn into a very dull 23 hour one that seems to stretch pointlessly into eternity without the tender guidance of a handy sleep aid. But that's not the point.

The boredom has led to a lot of music listening and artist rediscovering. Today I downloaded the new Cat Power album Jukebox that came out on Tuesday. Its mostly covers and she even does a cover of one of her own songs and reinvents it just as much as the James Brown and Hank Williams songs. I'll spare you the RollingStone-esque gushing about how she "inhabits" the songs and blah blah blah. I read somewhere that she was trying to capture that Fleetwood Mac sound from the Rumors album. She did a pretty good job.

Here's one of my favorites from Jukebox (click to listen or right-click and "save as" to keep it):

Lost Someone -- Its an old James Brown song

Chemtrails on German TV

This one has been a head-scratcher for me for a while. The whole thought that weather manipulation chemtrail programs have been going on all around us for years now is pretty unthinkable. But this story from German television was posted on YouTube last month and seems remarkably... reliable. Unlike the guy with the crazy look in his eyes ranting about it in front of your local organic grocery store.

In my cursory explorations here for the last hour (i have the flu and have nothing else to do), I did come across patent information for the HAARP program from way back in 1987. The patent is pretty dense; if you just want to peruse for a moment, drop all the way down to the last two paragraphs Link

Folk Covers of Hip Hop Songs

Link
Saw this on digg today. The only one missing from the list is Dynamite Hack's cover of "boyz in the hood" but its a pretty good list. The "Hey Ya" cover is the best.

People Movers

So Im working late tonight because... that's life. BUT luckily people who sit at computers and code and code and code all night get the perk of listening to a ton of really good music that they find and share with similarly inclined (demented) co-workers. I was walking back to my spot tonight and heard this song coming at out at me from behind a bunch of desks that contained some folks that kindly introduced me to it; it gave me the energy to get back and finish up the horrendously tedious task i stupidly volunteered for months ago and then put off as long as humanly possible. Anyway, I ripped it and offer it to you because I know that sometimes everybody has horrendously tedious tasks to accomplish and maybe just maybe this can be the soundtrack to it.

Click here to listen (oye, espana!) (or right click and do a save-as if you want to keep it).

The band is Hot Chip from the UK.

UPDATE: Apparently theres a video.

Long Lost

Whenever we would visit my grandparents as children, my grandmother would take us around to briefly meet all kinds of relatives scattered around southern New Mexico. I was never a big fan of those visits and one day I asked my grandmother why she wanted us to meet all these people. "So you don't grow up and marry them, of course."

I guess there was some wisdom in that, considering this story out of the UK.

Lived in Bars

Ran across this video this morning. Cat Power's pretty cool and the song is sweet and pretty appropriate for today.
