Local Supervillan seeks Henchperson(s) for full time/on-call position. Hours vary with each diabolical plan. Duties include, but are not limited to, bodyguarding, casing of potential locales/hideouts, information gathering, ego stroking, and light housekeeping.

Candidates should be reliable, punctual, and evil. Knowledge of martial arts and Microsoft Word a plus. If you do not already have a catchy nick-name, one will be assigned to you.

Candidates should understand that in case of a showdown with police, vigilantes, or other such heroic figures, henchperson(s) will be left behind to cover my escape. Rest assured that you will be rescued from incarceration at a later date.

Feel free to send resume and photo of your costume (new recruits may be required to wear a uniform based on my theme).

This Supervillan is NOT an equal oppurtunity employer, on account of I'm so evil.

LegalizeFerrets.org

I was biking to work today and saw a bumper sticker in the vicinity of Rainbow Grocery for LegalizeFerrets.org ... I kind of giggled and wondered at how everyone in northern California has a cause; there's one out there for everybody. I mulled it over for a moment and thought how its kind of silly to criminalize an animal; but then I thought back to how I ran into some friends of mine from high school when I lived in Berkeley and went over to their house where there were several ferrets in residence. They were really cute to look at, but they moved incredibly quickly and had absolutely no attention span and seemed only to be interested in finding food in any and all crevices, whether it be in the couch or your armpit. Imagine an overgrown squirrel on crack. Then I thought about the idea of them being everywhere, like cats in San Francisco, or possums in Berkeley, or mongoose in Hawaii. Ick. But I believe in democratic process and think that everyone should have their cause heard, so go check it out. There are some compelling arguments on this page of their site. Enjoy.

ADDENDUM: So of course being that the theme of the day is ferrets, I just happened to run across this hilarious flash animation by weworkforthem that is about, yes, a ferret on a flying carpet traveling thru the hinterlands of ferret-opia. In their words:

"The ferret journeys on his flying carpet to see the surreal creatures on this psychotic stretch of land. Creatures beg for nachos, a brown lump rocks the microphone while guitars dream of love and love dreams of heartache. Things get wild when the ferret travels on the octopus' turf. The violin warns the child, but it's too late until they meet the grand conductor that sings the mountain's praises."

VidyA at CounterPulse

Fenny invited me to go see this avant garde jazz band VidyA at the Red Poppy Art House the other night. And loving avant garde jazz I went...

Holy crap.

It may have been one of the best live jazz experiences of my life, if not *the* best. They blend smart, fast jazz percussion with riffs from the sax and violin on classical South Indian ragas. Its not a joke. If you love live music at all, you should go catch them at CounterPulse on May 26th, 27th, or 28th where they will be performing in a dance show called Avatars of Truth and Melody. The show I saw the other night at Red Poppy was a kind of rehearsal for the performance later this month. I was blown away and you will be too.

Bummer of bummers I will be in New York for the shows at the end of the month but at least I got to see them at Red Poppy, that little tiny art space on the corner of 23rd and Folsom that's got alot of cool stuff going on.

VidyA will also be playing at the Himalayan Art Fair at Live Oak Park on May 20 and then they are back at Red Poppy on the 8th of June. Here's their website, click on "Multimedia" > "Music" to hear some music samples. Its better live though.
